This is for Diyode's class set of laptops.

They are Dell Latitude E6400s, Core2Duo, 2.6GHz, 2GB RAM, 150 GB drives.

There are currently 18 laptops, with the intention of keeping 15 in rotation, with the remainder set aside for spare parts.

OS

What operating system do we want to install?

Decision is Ubuntu.

Windows

  • Most people know how to use Windows.
  • lots of applications available.
  • The Dell laptops all have SLIC 2.1 BIOS. Which means they are out of the box able to install Windows 7 and below without a license key.
  • The Dell laptops all come with Vista licenses. Vista is near end of life.

Linux

  • No licensing issues.
  • has a lot of applications.
  • application may not be mainstream ones that everybody knows how to use.

OS administration

OS Restore Notes

  • Insert USB with CloneZilla.
  • Turn on laptop.
  • Press F12 to bring up boot menu.
  • Select the USB entry on the boot menu.
  • Clonezilla will startup
  • Press OK for English on the Choose lanuage screen.
  • Press OK for Keep on the Keyboard configuration screen.
  • Select Start_Clonezilla
  • Select device-image work with disks or partitions using images.
    • The latest Clonezilla laptop image will always be on the Clonezilla install USB
  • Select local_dev Use local device.
  • Press Enter as the USB is already inserted.
  • Press Control-C to get past the disk scan.
  • On the next screen Select the 7G_exfat disk.
  • The next screen is where you select the laptop image to be. The image will have Diyode-laptop-Generic-2XXX-XX-XX_IMG
  • Select the correct Image and Click on Done.
  • Press Enter to continue.
  • Choose Beginner Mode and Select OK.
  • Select restordisk and Click OK.
  • Choose the image file to restore: Verify the proper IMG and Select OK
  • Choose the target disk. Should normally be only one entry "sda"
  • Select Yes, check the image before restoring and Choose OK.
  • Select -p choose and Choose OK.
  • Press Enter to continue.
    • Now Clonezilla will start to check the image and then restore the image to the local disk drive
    • Follow the instructions from this point
    • This will take a while. Usually about 15minutes.
